Mercredi, 9 Janvier 2013: Connection

Andréa had had an accident yesterday on his way back to Marseille so I was already worried about him. I was even more uneasy today when he told me he went to the doctor. Luckily, it had nothing to do with the accident. But, he was put on antibiotics so we weren't allowed any "bisous" for a few days. Merde! Oh well, I wouldn't have wanted to catch whatever bug he had anyway.

Since we didn't see each other today, we Skyped. He's always telling me that I'm beautiful and perfect...It's irritating when I know that I look like absolute crap but I still like hearing it at the same tie. I'm always saying "Arrete!" or "Stop!" and he always knows that I'm going to say that when he starts with the compliments so before I even say anything, he's already mouthing the words that are going to come out of my mouth. Ha haha. It's super cute, and hilarious :-) We've gotten to the point where we won't speak to each other for hours and message each other at the same time or finish each others' sentences. For this, Andréa has coined the term "connection." He originally called it "bluetooth" but I like "connection" better. Now those of you that are my Facebook friends know what those wall posts are all about. Ha haha.

Andréa is so cute! You all will be hearing a lot about him for awhile. I just find some of the things that come out of his mouth incredible...For instance, he told me "Tu es mon soleil..." Ahh!!!! So cute!!!! This is the type of romance that I need in my life. And it's the forever type of romance...I spent hours looking up pictures of half asian children so you know that this guy has changed my life. I didn't want children previously, but I'm sure I found the perfect guy for my life...And when you have that, and each other, you can have anything--including confidence in family life...

Mardi, 8 Janvier 2013: "One must act in painting as in life, directly." - Pablo Picasso

From 10h00 to 21h00 (minus a three hour gap) I was painting. Painting what? All of the kids' closet doors. No, I'm not the next Picasso. I'm just determined. Céline had made sure to tell me that I didn't HAVE to do anything, but if I wanted to, that I could paint. I know that I'm never obligated to do anything but now that I'm not taking classes, I have much more time on my hands. I thought that painting would be fun and somewhat relaxing but after my mild OCD kicked in, it became a bit of a pain--especially after the 3rd door. There were 8 total...I started out with one coat of primer, but that didn't completely cover so I did a second. Then I moved onto the real painting. I ended up doing four coats on each side before I was completely satisfied. Oy vey...Sometimes I wish I could be one of those people that could half-@$$ jobs and just let it go. But noooooo...

The doors were originally an ugly brown color. Now they're a soft white which dramatically brightens up the rooms. This change seems to have affected the childrens' psyche. They spend much more time in their rooms and seem to be more cheerful--OR...this could just be a coincidence.

During the 3 hour painting break, Andréa came to visit. He texted me before he arrived and asked me to come downstairs. I wasn't sure why, but the suspense was killing me. When I saw his car pull in, I went outside. When he opened his door, I saw a baby-faced Andréa. It was so weird because he looks so much younger without his beard and with his hair shorter. I felt like a cradle-robber...He's already 3 years younger than me. Ha haha. After we went back inside, I found myself staring at him at random intervals--not because I thought he looked funny, but because he is just so damn handsome! I love being able to see his face.

Andréa had worked from 4h00 to noon so he was pretty beat. He watched me paint for awhile and I watched him watch me before I made him go lie down. I continued to paint for another 10 minutes before I went to check on him in my room. He's always uncomfortable at my host family's house because he doesn't want to impose but they absolutely adore him and I always ask maman for permission before he comes over. I eventually got him to lay down. I cuddled with him until he passed out. I ended up passing out too--only to be woken up by my own snoring. Ha haha. We chuckled together and I recommenced as big spoon. He was the only one asleep this time, and when I was sure of it, I snuck out of the room and went back downstairs to paint.

When Andréa woke up he came downstairs to find me. I had been blasting 90's pop hits and singing at the top of my lungs while painting so I was a bit embarrassed when I realized he was there. Ha haha. I put the roller down and went back upstairs with him for a bit. We sat on the couch together and cuddled with 98° and Mariah Carey playing on Grooveshark. When "Whenever You Call" played, I thought about the lyrics and how beautiful they were. It was already romantic, sitting there on the couch alone with Andréa in this humongous house so I decided to add a bit of a something to it. I explained to Andréa in french "This song is beautiful...If you understand the lyrics. She says 'I won't ever be too far to feel you.' " He just closed his eyes, dropped his head on my chest, and said "Sooo cute...." Ha haha.

As 17h15 rolled around, it was time for both of us to part ways. I was going to pick the kids up from school so he was going back to Marseille. We were both waiting at the stop light at the bottom of the hill when Andréa ran out of his car. I was so worried! I didn't know what was wrong! I rolled my window down as he came toward my car and yelled "quoi???" He replied with "nothing" and shrugged his shoulders. I must've looked bewildered but he gave me a quick kiss, and smiled before jumping back into his car. Ahhh!!!!!! I died with happiness inside. Not only do I love surprises, but cute surprises like that??? Oh la la...I really enjoy those moments when you start out feeling like something's wrong and you end up overwhelmed with happiness. Andréa is so perfect!!! If it's his goal to make me fall in love with him then he's already succeeded!!!

Lundi, 7 Janvier 2013: J'ai dit...F#%&!!!

Gregoire woke me up at 1h36 this morning, crying and SCREAMING! "Maman!!! MAMAN!!! MAAAAMAAAAANNNN!!!!" It scares the crap out of me when he does this. It didn't take him long to go back to sleep after I told him he had no choice. Because of this disturbance in my sleep though, I was exhausted after taking him to the day care. I did about two loads of laundry, folded, and ironed it all before I laid down for a nap--a FOUR hour nap!!! I tried getting up after an hour or two but I still felt dead so I went back to sleep. I threw the last load of clothes in the dryer before I went and picked up the triplets and Gregoire.

The kids were alright today. Camille was dumped by her boyfriend Victor for an American girl she's friends with. She tried to be strong for me but she ended up breaking down and crying. She'll find out later in life that relationships get much more difficult. I said the usual "There's plenty of fish in the sea" which she didn't really understand. I followed that up with "un perdu, dix de rétrouvés." She understood this well and relaxed.

Nothing else happened until I was on my way home with all four of the kids. Baptiste had been spitting on everyone in the backseat for play. He ended up spitting a huge loogie in my freshly-washed hair and it pissed me off so much that I went off on him. When he said he didn't understand what I was saying I just said "J'AI...DIT...FUCK!!!!" I knew he actually understood but was playing dumb. I was just so absolutely disgusted with him and with what he did that I just stopped speaking. When he got the drift that I was super mad, he stopped talking, stopped moving, everything. Everyone in the car was silent except for Léa who continuously tries to diffuse the situation by asking really stupid questions. In the midst of one of her ridiculous demands, I just turn to her (ALMOST Linda Blair style), glared at her, and said "Stop!" And that's all I had to do.

When we got back to the house Léa said to me "Mélinda...Baptiste ne veux pas que tu dis à maman de lui."--> 'Melinda....Baptiste doesn't want you to tell mom about him.' I turn the car off and just say "J'ai déja dit. C'est ta fault Baptiste. Le prochaine fois, tu ne vas pas faire comme ca." --> 'I already told her. It's your fault Baptiste. The next time, you're not going to do that.' He just lets out a little 'Oui' and we all walk into the house together.

I continue to ignore all of the kids for the next hour or so, hiding in my room, folding clothes until Baptiste comes in and asks fake questions as if he needs something. He then completes his exit by saying "Et, désolé pour...dans la voiture...Je t'aime" --> 'And, sorry for...in the car...I love you' and gives me a big kiss before walking out with his head down. I grab him really quick and give him a kiss back. Kids hate it when you're mad at them. It makes them uncomfortable. But really, he's 10 and that behavior will never be okay. He's past that age...

Dimanche, 6 Janvier 2013: Carry-le-Rouet

Pre-dawn Sunday was awful. I had had my first nightmare in what seems like years. I could dream about anything from falling to zombies, and I'm never scared. The only things I fear are subjects that are personal--like family. In my dream, Didier was in the hospital--hooked up to a ton of machines but walking around regardless. He was pacing around the hospital room with a pad of paper and pen because he was writing a letter to my family about our time together. The nightmare then cuts out to early the next morning. There were a bunch of nurses sitting in a circle chatting. One nurse said "So how's Didier doing today?" An older nurse who is knitting in a rocking chair then replies with "Well, didn't you hear??? He died last night!!!" Another nurse then says "No!!! He was my favorite patient!!!" I then heard myself saying "Are you being serious right now?!?" and then I start wailing, sobbing. I feel as if I woke up because I had heard myself crying out loud. The next thing I did after I realized where I was, was exclaim "OH SHIT!!!" I woke Andréa up. I don't know if he had heard me crying or not. I don't even know if I was actually crying out loud. Once he made sure I was okay, I made him turn around so that I could be big spoon. I clutched to him tightly and fell back to sleep this way. Andréa says that when you have a dream about someone dying, you actually add time onto their life. I was comforted by this...

I was half-asleep when Andréa came in later that morning.

Andréa: 'Do you want coffee?'
Me: "Non. Merci."
Andréa: 'You don't want coffee?'
Me: "Non. Pourquoi?"
Andréa: 'Because I already made it.'
Me: "Oh, okay. No, I want coffee."
Andréa: 'Do you want tartines (toast)'?
Me: "No"
Andréa: 'No? Look.'

I look to my left and there's a cute tray with my espresso and toast on it...He is so damn cute that boy...I am one super lucky girl!!!

Andréa took me to Carry-le-Rouet today. We had lunch at his father's house. His father, Ferrari, is super sweet with an uplifting spirit. His girlfriend Chantal is more like me, more serious, or so it seems until you see their house. Everything is decked out in purple! Purple upholstery, purple decorations, purple tiles, placemats, plates. She even wore all purple! I'm surprised her asthmatic pomeranian Sucret wasn't died purple. I've never seen a place like that in real life. It reminded me of Problem Child 2 when Lavanda DuMore decorates the bachelor pad. If you can imagine it though, it was actually very pretty. The mixture of purples was done well. I don't know how she did it!

Note: This is not their kitchen. Just a good example of how it can be done well

We had lamb for lunch with fried potatoes. Oh my goodness, that lamb was so delicious but I was just so full. That is seriously the BEST lamb I've had my entire life! The flavors were just incredibly intricate! Ah...We had lime sorbet with vodka as a "digestif"/dessert. This concoction called "colonel" is supposed to make you feel less full. And actually, it really did work. If I am using my chemistry/biology studies correctly, maybe the alcohol dehydrates all of the food in your stomach--shrinking it in size.

Andréa took me on a tour of Carry after lunch. It was so beautiful and picturesque--just like all of the other coastal Mediterranean towns I've visited. So serene. Andréa is always asking me if I would consider moving to France permanently if he bought a house here, or if he bought a house there. Instead of saying no this time, I half-seriously/half-jokingly said 'yes.' This town is AMAZING!!! You would just have to see it to understand. Though I think I would be happy anywhere as long as Andréa was with me--except in a ghetto ;-)

Samedi, 5 Janvier 2013: Extra!!!

I forgot to mention all of the bizarre things that were said Saturday...

Andréa casually told me that he researched me while we were shopping for groceries, lol. He said that after he met me at the shoot he Googled my first and last name and "au pair" because he didn't know what one was. I wouldn't have thought it was strange if he didn't throw my name in there. But because he did that he was directly led to my au pair profile, so I guess that explained more than a web definition.

If I didn't like him so much I probably would've thought it was creepy. But I understand that he was curious about me and my Facebook profile is private, ha haha. I always find it a bit odd when people talk about researching others on the internet but my buddy Danny says it's how things are done nowadays. Have you ever Googled your own name? It's ridiculous how much crap shows up, even for a name as rare as mine. I didn't even know I was affiliated with half of the pages that pop up.

Back to Andréa. Later that evening when we got back from the store he decided to tell me that his family found out that I existed without him telling them. Okay, fine...But then he told me that his mom was Facebook stalking me. MmKay...But then she saw a picture of me with one of the kids I au pair and she demanded why he didn't tell her I had kids, lol. Oh Dear Lord...Do you see what happens when you don't ask the source? Ha haha. She also demanded to know my zodiac sign, and when she found out I was a Virgo she told him that we would not work out because our personalities are too different. Ha haha. I think I'm going to like this woman...She sounds very interesting. I'm very much into astrology, but probably not as much as she is. Anyway, you can never have enough strange people in your life. They make your experience more rich ;-)

That's my peeping face. Ha haha

Samedi, 5 Janvier 2013: From Presqu'Ile to Dance Central

Apparently I snore. I'm blaming it on Andréa's pillows which are way too fluffy for me. Ha haha. We were woken up by a crying baby the next wall over. Oh well, I didn't come to Marseille to sleep. His roommate was away on a ski trip so we had the entire apartment to ourselves ;-) ;-)

When we finally composed ourselves, we got ready and headed out for the day. Andréa took me to this quaint Greek restaurant in Marseille. It was absolutely empty and I have no idea why because it was the MOST AMAZING Greek food I've ever had!!! We had tapas for an appetizer which included Tyropita, Spanokopita, fresh bread with 6 different sauces/toppings--grilled mushrooms, hummus, tzatziki, roasted red peppers in olive oil, eggplant caviar, and another type of hummus. We weren't even halfway done with the tapas and I was already full. Andréa had fed me muffins for breakfast because "Il faut que tu manger" ('It's necessary that you eat'). Not only do I dislike sweets in general, but it's even more difficult for me to eat in the morning. And they were chocolate chip muffins...Ick!!! Two things I don't enjoy eating rolled into one. Ha haha. I did it to make him happy, but I was way too full at lunch.

As for entrées, Andréa had a chopped steak stuffed with feta alongside grilled potatoes while I had marinated pork in a red wine/tomato sauce with potato purée and salad on the side. Like I said, I was already full so I ate most of the pork and basically left the rest of the food on the plate. I felt so bad because I'm part of the Clean Plate Club normally, but I started my diet at the beginning of the week so my stomach is super small...

Andréa basically had to roll me back to the car. I was so full I thought I was going to get sick, but I held myself together. He drove us to Cassis after lunch. Cassis is a small coastal town on the Mediterranean--not far from where we live. It reminded me a lot of Nice with all of the expensive cars and houses. We went to an area called "Les Calanques" which is basically a steep white valley enclosing a lake. The cliffs were stark white but crisp and beautiful.

We took a long walk around the inlet before stopped at "Presqu'Ile" which is a beautiful peninsula. I experienced my first nude beach here...It was a bit awkward but no one else paid any attention so I tried to stay cool. The view was so breath-taking...I just sat with my arms around Andréa, breathed him in, watched the waves crash, and enjoyed the sun. It felt like it was at least 70’F here. Well, I guess there were people sunbathing nude, so I'm probably not too far off.

 Nude beachers by the water

Andréa and I headed back to Marseille after taking in all of the scenery. This took a few hours. We didn't leave before I found the perfect rock to commemorate the trip though ;-) When we got back to Marseille, we did some shopping and by shopping I mean we bought a ton of alcohol for the night. Andréa was having a little get-together.

Manon was the first to arrive. She was her usual spunky self with extra punk tonight because she wouldn't know if her boyfriend could come out until a certain time. He's Jewish and in his practice he doesn't use his cell phone on certain days until a certain hour. When she finally brought him over I saw that they were the perfect couple. They totally mesh. They have the same kind of energy, the same amount of it, and they look really good together. I can only hope that Andréa and I can live up to that ;-) We were a crazy quadruple. After mange-ing on some pizza, Yosef and I got down on some Dance Central. It was so funny watching him dance that I laughed until I cried. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!

After a bit of hookah and bonding, more people arrived. First there was Andréa's roommate Flora who showed up with a gushing wound on her head. Then there was Thomas and his girlfriend. Thomas is a childhood friend of Andréa's who had just spent winter break in the Caribbean. You could tell, he was super duper tan! The night was fun overall but I was so beat from the visit to Cassis that I nearly fell asleep in the living room. I get the feeling that everyone else was pretty tired too because they all called it a night at the same time...

Vendredi, 4 Janvier 2013: Andréa the Babysitter

Andréa came to town around 17h00. He arrived sooner than I had expected because I passed him on my way to get gas. I told him I'd be back in a few minutes, and really, it should have only taken a few minutes...First I went to the ATM to withdraw some money for gas because my card doesn't always work at the stations. I ended up forgetting my card at the ATM and double-backing to retrieve it. By the time I got back to the ATM, I found a slip that said "carte oublié" but no card. The machine had "eaten" it for safety. I buzzed my way into the bank and approached a young male teller. I explained in poor french that I had forgotten my card in the ATM, when he said he couldn't do anything in broken english, I batted my eyes and said "Are you sure?" And that's all I had to do to get the ball rolling. He went into every office until someone came out. You would think that with your ID card ready it would just take a few minutes but this was an absolute fiasco! The bank manager had to go through this intricate process to get my card out of the ATM, then she had to copy my ID, have me fill out a form, call the bank headquarters to make sure my card wasn't de-activated, and then, and only then was I able to leave.

I drove to the nearest gas station to fill up because I was literally running on empty. This car guzzles gas up so quickly and I barely drive anywhere. Good thing Céline and Didier pay for my gas, otherwise, I'd be broke. Anyway, the card didn't work at the first gas station, so I drove to a second, and then a third. The card finally worked at the Total gas station though it normally isn't accepted here. I filled my tank up and headed back to the house. When I got there, poor Andréa was still sitting in the car waiting for me--45 minutes later!!! This is the third time I've been late and it's always 45 minutes to an hour. He is so patient with me...Thank goodness. Though I know I can't keep doing this. I swear I'm not doing it on purpose. I'm otherwise very punctual...

Céline and Didier went to a party tonight so I was asked to babysit. Andréa decided to be my moral support so that he could spend time with me. He ended up basically feeding Gregoire, playing with him, and putting him to bed. Who's the au pair now? lol. I would've done it but Gregoire is totally enamored with Andréa. It's cute. Andréa is gung-ho on having kids some day. This showed me that he would be a good father. I never wanted to have children before but being with Andréa has made me interested in the idea. That's definitely new! And unexpected! Maybe I've found someone worth being a parent WITH. It's one thing to want kids, but honestly, you really have to find that perfect partner to make it all work--the way that I think it should anyway.

I basically cuddled with Andréa from 20h00 until mom and dad came home at 1h00. The party they went to was mustache-themed. Ha haha. Céline was so funny and super cute with her silver bowler hat and handlebar mustache! Didier looked like a bad ass with his huge mustache, even so, I couldn't take him seriously. The four of us chatted for a bit, ate some leftover brioche and gawked at some wild boars in the garden. Afterward, mom herded me and Andréa out the door because I was spending the weekend with him...To be continued ;-)
